Goal setting is one of the most frequently overlooked steps to successful weight loss. So many people begin a diet without a well formed goal in mind. If you are truly ready to begin losing weight, start by creating a concrete, short-term goal that is rich in details. When you reach it you will feel fabulous and ready to keep going if you still have more weight to lose.

To be effective, your goal must be positive, realistic and specific.
An example of a good weight loss goal is: “I will lose 8 pounds in the next 30 days by eating only 1200 calories per day and exercising 5 times a week for at least 30 minutes each time.

Timing is Everything

Setting a time frame in which to meet your goal is very important. It can be any time frame you want: weekly, monthly or by a special event that is coming up. However, it is most effective if you break down your weight loss goals into small increments. You are much more likely to be successful with a goal like 8 pounds in a month than 96 pounds in a year. Even if your ultimate goal is 96 pounds, make it manageable and measurable with smaller goals.

A goal without a plan is simply a wish or a dream. Good goals involve a plan that tells how you will achieve success. Therefore, before you set your goal, know if it is reasonable and attainable, and how you can reach it. When you write your goal include the details like how many calories you will consume daily and how often you will exercise.

Remind Yourself of Your Goal

Constant reminders of your goal will help you stay on track. Place a noticeable copy of your goal in a variety of places to help keep your focus on what you want to achieve. Post it on your fridge, bathroom mirror, next to your house and office phone, in your car and even framed on your dining table.

Successful weight loss is all about putting every advantage possible on your side and being committed to doing what needs to be done. Set a carefully thought out goal before you do one more thing in your effort to lose weight.
